Taiwan Labels Chinese Blockade an Act of War as Military Drills Escalate
The Taiwanese defense chief warns that such a move would have significant implications for global trade.
Taiwan's defense chief has issued a warning that any Chinese blockade would be considered an act of war, with significant repercussions for international trade. This statement came after China conducted military exercises aimed at encircling the self-governed island.
Defense Minister Wellington Koo made the remarks on Wednesday as the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) continued its drills near Taiwan. Last week, these exercises included a simulated blockade. China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has stated it reserves the right to use force to gain control of the island. The PLA frequently conducts military drills around Taiwan, simulating blockades of key ports and assaults on maritime and land targets.
