India's Cross-Border Terrorism and Extremist Agenda Put the Future of Indian Students at Risk
Rising tensions between Canada and India are casting uncertainty over the future of Indian students seeking education opportunities in Canada.
A number of Indian students, particularly from Punjab and Haryana, have put their plans to study in Canada on hold due to escalating tensions between the two countries.
This tension stems from the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh activist involved in the Khalistan movement advocating for an independent Sikh state. Nijjar was shot dead by two masked gunmen in Surrey, British Columbia, in June last year.
Since Nijjar’s death, Ottawa has accused New Delhi of orchestrating the attack on Canadian soil and has implicated India’s Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah in a campaign of intimidation against Sikh activists. Canada has since expelled several Indian diplomats, most recently in October, prompting reciprocal diplomatic expulsions from New Delhi as the political standoff continues.
